Gunman remains at large after man shot dead outside Catford theatre

A man was shot dead outside a theatre in a busy part of South London in the early hours yesterday morning.

The gunman remains at large as police launch a murder investigation into the shooting.

Officers were called to reports of a shooting at around 4.30am in Catford Broadway, Lewisham.

At the scene, opposite Lewisham Town Hall and Catford Broadway theatre, officers and London Ambulance Service crews found a man – believed to be in his 30s – with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Met are in the process of informing the victims’ next of kin. A cordon remains in place at the scene and officers are patrolling the area.

No arrests have been made at this stage, the Met said.

Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, responsible for policing in the South East Command Unit, which covers the Lewisham area, said: “My thoughts and sympathies are with the family and loved ones of this man, who has lost his life in very tragic circumstances.

“The incident took place in a busy part of South London and I’m hopeful there will have been a number of witnesses who I would appeal to come forward.

“I know such a shocking incident will cause great concern in the community and want to reassure residents that we have assigned significant resources to this investigation.

“We also have officers patrolling the local area and I would urge those with concerns to talk to them. They are there to support you.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or ‘X’ @MetCC quoting CAD1160/10Mar. You can also provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
