Heroic pub security guards awarded for bravery during homophobic knife attack
Two security guards working on the door of a Clapham pub during a horrific homophobic attack last summer have been commended for their bravery.
On August 13, 2023, two men were attacked by a man wielding a knife while they were outside the popular LGBTQ+ venue, the Two Brewers, in Clapham High Street.
The attacker lunged over the smoking area barriers and stabbed the two men, who were in their 20s and 30s, before running off.
Both men ran into the venue while door security, Itua Moses and Wyn Mowatt, ensured everyone from the smoking area got inside safely.
Once everyone was inside, Mr Moses and Mr Mowatt bolted the doors and calmly provided first aid to the victims while waiting for ambulances to arrive.
Both of the victims have recovered from their injuries.
The security duo have now received the Star Award by Paul Wotton from the National Pubwatch during a recent ceremony at the Two Brewers.
Jimmy Smith, general manager of the Two Brewers, said: “I’m thrilled to see both men’s actions recognised by the National Pubwatch.
“Their quick thinking and bravery will have helped potentially save lives and prevent further injuries, and I can’t thank the two men enough for what they did.
“The police and members of the public all highly commended Mr Moses and Mr Mowatt’s actions as they both went above and beyond to make guests feel safe in a dangerous situation, ensuring the attacker could not hurt anyone else in our bar.”
A 19-year-old man was arrested in South Norwood in September 2023, on suspicion of two counts of GBH.
