Homes without running water for third day after bust main in Crystal Palace

Some South Londoners are still facing water outages or significant issues this morning after a water pipe burst on Tuesday night.

Thames Water said the problem was caused by a burst water main in Alleyn Road, Dulwich, as well as flooding at the Crystal Palace pumping station. It said engineers were working to fix the problem.

In total, five thousand homes in SE19, SE20, SE23, SE26, SE27 and SW16 have been affected by the incident.

In a statement published this morning, a spokesman said: “Our engineers are working to fix the damaged pipe and are re-routing water to those in the affected area.

“Most people should see their water supply returning, though pressure may be lower than normal, especially in taller buildings. Some customers may still be affected.”

Thames Water set up a bottled water station at Sainsbury’s in Southend Lane, but this was closed last night due to a “security incident”.

A spokesman said: “We apologise to customers who were unable to collect water from this location.

“We have been contacting everyone in the affected area who has pre-registered with us as having special requirements so we can make sure we give them support. We are also working to make sure schools and hospitals have adequate alternative water supplies.”

The water company has warned customers that as their water returns it may be cloudy, or filled with bubbles. This is due to air trapped in the pipes, and it is safe to drink, a spokesman said.
