‘I’m still in shock’: Brixton man escapes near death as wall collapses in front of him
A man has escaped near death after he was hit in the neck with a brick from a collapsed wall from a row of houses in Stockwell.
Fabio Simoes, 33, from Bellefield Road was heading home on his scooter this afternoon at around 2.40pm when the wall from a row of houses in Stockwell Avenue, Brixton, collapsed right in front of him.
Luckily Mr Simoes appears to have suffered minor injuries but said he would seeking medical attention at A&E.
“I’m still in shock,” he said. “A brick scraped my shoulder and neck. I don’t know whether it’s adrenaline, it was traumatising.
“The whole thing came down and I was closest to it.
“I ran over to make sure there was no one under the bricks. I’m just glad there wasn’t a body under that rubble.
“It’s fortunate no one was on the path at the time otherwise there would have been a fatality.”
Mr Simoes said the the wall that is attached to at least three houses at the top of the building above the Tudor windows fell down.
He said debris had also fallen onto a car parked in the street which was damaged.
Mr Simoes confirmed that the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and Metropolitan Police were on the scene.
A LFB spokeswoman said: “Firefighters have been called to a building collapse in Stockwell Avenue in Brixton.
“The parapet on the roof of two buildings converted into flats collapsed into the street below.
“Surrounding properties have been evacuated as a precaution and a 25-metre cordon is in place. There are currently no reports of any injuries.
“The brigade was called at 2.40pm. One fire engine from Clapham fire station, two fire rescue units from Battersea and Heston fire stations and a 32-metre turntable ladder from Old Kent Road Fire Station are at the scene.”
