A councillor accused of sharing Islamophobic posts on social media has been suspended by the Labour Party, it has been confirmed.
Labour said Kensington and Chelsea councillor Eva Jedut was given an administrative suspension while a source claims she was told to stand aside as far back as April this year.
Councillor Jedut, who represents Dalgarno ward, is accused of sharing Islamophobic and racist posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, and is being investigated by the party, a source has confirmed.
Labour said it takes complaints seriously and assesses them in accordance with its rules and procedures.
Cllr Jedut has not responded to a request for comment. Kensington and Chelsea Labour Group said it could not comment on the ongoing issue.
A number of posts allegedly shared on cllr Jedut’s account on X have appeared Islamophobic in nature.
One post questioned if the Labour Party had been trying to impose Sharia Law in the UK through its Muslim members.
The post included screenshots of a Wikipedia page explaining Sir Trevor Phillips’ suspension from the Labour Party in March 2020 over alleged Islamophobic statements. Phillips was reinstated in July 2021.
On September 15, she appeared to call on refugees to seek asylum in Saudi Arabia.
Another post claimed anti-Christian sentiment was “real” in the UK while sharing an article on Poland’s upcoming referendum asking if the country should accept “thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa”.
Another describes the All Party Parliamentary Group’s definition of Islamophobia as “fiction” and later as “wrong”.
Kensington and Chelsea council said it has not received any formal notification of a change to cllr Jedut’s membership of the local Labour Group and does not comment on matters relating to her membership.
Speaking generally, it said there is no place in its communities or within the council for racism and discriminatory language.
It added the council has clear arrangements in place should someone wish to raise a complaint against any councillor, which can be found on their website.
The suspension comes months after Hammersmith and Fulham councillor quit the Labour Party after allegedly being suspended for sharing racist and anti-Semitic tweets.
Cllr David Morton resigned his membership in July with “immediate effect” claiming the party no longer reflected the views of his constituents and that there had been a “smear campaign” against him by Labour.
