Location of 42,000 potential homes in Croydon revealed

The locations of 42,000 new homes which are planned for Croydon over the next 18 years have been revealed.

The homes are set to be built in the borough between up until 2039, the council’s updated draft local plan has revealed.

It was first published in 2018.

The most homes will be built in the “Croydon opportunity area”, with 9,753 homes earmarked for the area around East Croydon Station.

It breaks down the target of how many homes are set to be built in 16 different areas across the borough, which are:

  • Addington – 568
  • Addiscombe – 647
  • Broad Green and Selhurst – 587
  • Coulsdon – 2160
  • Croydon Opportunity Area – 9753
  • Crystal Palace and Upper Norwood – 382
  • Kenley and Old Coulsdon – 725
  • Norbury – 225
  • Purley – 5735
  • Purley Way Transformation Area – 7515
  • Sanderstead – 885
  • Selsdon – 633
  • Shirley – 278
  • South Croydon – 474
  • South Norwood and Woodside – 331
  • Thornton Heath – 1063
  • Waddon – 413

The council hopes that more than 7,515 homes will be built in the Purley Way across three new local centres using brownfield land.

In Purley, the council expects to see 5,735 homes to be built up to 2039.

Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture and regeneration said: “Croydon’s housing target of 42,000 new homes by 2039 and the need to respond quickly to the climate change emergency, means our borough is facing some really big challenges.

“I feel confident that this updated Local Plan puts Croydon in a strong position for a sustainable future that benefits all.”

The council received more than 3,000 responses to shape its updated local plan.

The draft plan will be discussed by the council’s cabinet on Monday, December 6.

If approved it will trigger another six-week consultation next year.
