London borough with the best parks named in new independent report

Lambeth parks have been named the best in London, with Lewisham and Southwark parks in second and third place.

The borough ranked top out of all local authorities across the ten criteria in the Good Parks for London report. It also scored highest for public satisfaction in parks for spots like Brockwell Park’s meadow and walled garden.

Sonia Winifred, Lambeth councillor with responsibility for equalities and culture, said: “I’m thrilled and delighted that Lambeth has scored so highly in this year’s report.”

“Our parks and green spaces have proved to be a lifeline for our residents during this incredibly challenging year, and this achievement reflects so well on our dedicated and hardworking staff, volunteers and friend’s groups.”

Lewisham scored highest for collaboration with local groups, such as the 3 Rivers Clean Up scheme for the Pool, Quaggy and Ravensbourne rivers and the Lewisham Biodiversity Partnership to improve natural features in the borough.

Southwark came first for supporting nature. It was commended for protecting biodiversity and making nature accessible over its 64 sites of importance for nature conservation and seven local nature reserves, including Sydenham Hill Wood and Lavender Pond.

Greenwich ranked top for community involvement through its network of park friends’ groups and the Greenwich Parks Forum. Last year Plumcroft Primary School planted new trees in Shrewsbury Park with the Friends of Shrewsbury Park.

Kensington & Chelsea won the award for quality for its Green Flag and London in Bloom awards.

The lockdown has seen an increase in the use of parks and green spaces across the capital.

Parks for London Chief Executive Tony Leach, said: “On April 18 during Lockdown one, the Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick said ‘people need parks’. And, we’ve seen how true that is.”

“Particularly during the summer, when parks in London were literally bursting at the seams, as people flocked to enjoy the outdoors, meet friends or to exercise.”
