Man arrested over Daniel Khalife alleged prison escape

A man has been arrested as part of a Met Police investigation into the alleged escape of prisoner Daniel Khalife from HMP Wandsworth last September.

The 24-year-old man, who is not a member of staff at HMP Wandsworth, was arrested on Wednesday morning at an address in east London.

He was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, and he was taken into custody at a London police station. He was subsequently bailed to a date in late April.

Khalife is due to go on trial at the Old Bailey in October 2024 after pleading not guilty to charges alleging he escaped from HMP Wandsworth.

In all he faces four charges. They are:

  • Escape from prison
  • Eliciting or attempted eliciting of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism
  • Preparing a bomb hoax
  • Collecting, recording, publishing or communicating information useful to the enemy

Detective Chief Superintendent Gareth Rees, of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “This arrest follows months of careful investigation into the alleged escape and enquiries remain ongoing into this.

“We understand that there will be significant public and media interest in this arrest but with Khalife now charged and awaiting trial, it is extremely important that people do not report, comment or share information – including online – which could in any way prejudice these future court proceedings.”
