Man charged with murder and two others arrested after fatal shooting in Brixton

A man has been charged with murder after a fatal shooting in Brixton last week.

Trevin Campbell, 31, of Kingswood Avenue, Thornton Heath was arrested on Monday and will appear in custody at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today charged with the murder of 25-year-old Gary Mayhew.

Two other men aged 27 and 37 have been arrested and have been bailed pending further enquiries in late November.

The victim, Mr Mayhew, is thought to be from the Camberwell area, and was named by police earlier this week – although a formal identification has not taken place.

A post-mortem conducted on Saturday, October 23, found his cause of death to have been a gunshot wound to the leg.

Cops were alerted by hospital staff in the early hours of last Thursday (October 21) after a man was admitted suffering gunshot injuries.

It is believed that the shooting took place around Belinda Road,  shortly after 6am that day.

Mr Mayhew died in hospital later that afternoon.

That same evening firearms officers made two arrests after a vehicle was stopped in Asylum Road.

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove who is responsible for policing in Lambeth and Southwark said: “I am saddened that we have lost another life to gun violence.

“I understand the shock and concern this incident has caused among the local community and I want to reassure residents that specialist officers are working tirelessly to determine who is responsible for this.

“Additional officers will be patrolling in and around the local area and I urge anyone with concerns to please approach them and speak to them.

“We are also working with our partners and community to provide support and reassurance to those affected. Together we are determined to end serious violence and keep people safe.

“Our thoughts remain with the Gary’s family at this devastating time.”
