Man dies after flat fire in Southwark

A man has died after a flat fire in Southwark yesterday morning.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at a ground floor flat in Brook Drive.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the fire, but he died at the scene.

A woman from a neighbouring flat was also rescued by firefighters. She was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Five fire engines and about 35 firefighters were called to the flat, which was significantly damaged by the fire.

The London Fire Brigade was called at around 9.50am and the fire was under control by around 11.30am.

Fire crews from the Old Kent Road, Dockhead, Richmond and Lambeth attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
