Man injured in Battersea house explosion after suspected gas leak

A house has exploded in Battersea after a suspected gas leak earlier today.

Firefighters were called to an explosion at a house in Elsley Road, where a suspected gas explosion had blown up the whole of an end-of-terrace house, resulting in a partial roof collapse.

One man left the building before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived and has been assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

Rubble on the pavement and blown-out windows can be seen in photographs taken of the scene. Firefighters said no-one was currently unaccounted for.

A spokeswoman for LFB said: “A 25m cordon has been erected and nearby houses have been evacuated.

“The Brigade was called at 1347. Fire crews from Chelsea, Wandsworth, Brixton  and Clapham fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause is not known at this time.”
