Marathon runner raises £1,366 for charity which helps adults read

A woman who helps adults in Lambeth to read has raised more than £1,000 for her charity after running the London Marathon.

Hannah Hull, 29, from north Lambeth, finished the mammoth race in 3hrs 30mins, slicing seven minutes off her previous record.

Ms Hull, who volunteers at Read Easy Lambeth, also smashed her fundraising target of £500 after raising £1,366 for her charity.

She said: “I first became involved with Read Easy as a reading coach at the beginning of this year.

“Having a lifelong love of reading myself I could not imagine what it must be like not to be able to read and I just wanted to help change someone’s life for the better.”

There are about 17,000 adults in Lambeth who either cannot read, or read with great difficulty. According to the charity, this figure jumps to 2.5million adults across the UK.

Read Easy is a National Charity that provides free one-to-one coaching to teach adults to read.

Its work is carried out by groups across the country – including Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon and Greenwich – which are run on a voluntary basis.

Funds for teaching materials and training for coaches are raised by each local group themselves.

Ms Hull said: “Since January I have been working with a 60-year-old lady who is learning to read for the first time.

“Seeing her make progress, and the pride she is taking in that progress, is simply fantastic. And it’s making me a better communicator at the same time.

“It’s the support and training that myself and all coaches receive from Read Easy that makes this possible.

“So I thought what better way to dedicate my second marathon than raising money that will help our group train more coaches like me and work with more adults like the lady I currently work with, who need our support.”

In preparation for the marathon on April 21, Ms Hull said she ran a maximum of 40 miles each week and supplemented her training with interval work, spinning glasses and pilates.
