Met policeman given written warning for sending homophobic content to 55 colleagues whilst on duty

A Met policeman sent homophobic content to 55 colleagues whilst on duty.

PC David Bewick was given a “final written warning” following a misconduct hearing which concluded last Thursday, August 26.

PC Bewick, who is attached to the Met’s Central South Command Unit, was found to have breached the standards of professional behaviour in respect of Authority, Respect & Courtesy, Discreditable Conduct, Duties & Responsibilities, and Equality and Diversity.

On October 13, 2019, whilst on duty, PC Bewick sent an email and attachment containing homophobic content from his MPS account to 55 colleagues within the organisation.

The matter was reported to the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) on October 30, 2019.

PC Bewick was placed on restricted duties.

Chief Inspector Matt Cox, DPS, said: “The Met will not tolerate the sharing of any material that could be deemed as discriminatory and it is especially shocking when Met systems are used for this purpose.

“We expect all of our officers to uphold our high standards of behaviour and will take action when those standards are not met.”
