New murals in Camberwell as part of a project to boost interest and pride in the area

Some people like to paint the town red.
But artist Lionel Stanhope is painting his Camberwell neighbourhood black and white.
A new mural of a piano keyboard appeared in Camberwell over the Bank Holiday weekend as part of a project to boost interest and pride in the area.
The musical mural adorns the wall of 36 to 38 Peckham Road and was inspired by the building’s history as a piano factory.
It is part of the wider mural project being run by the Camberwell Identity Group.
Chair of the Camberwell Identity Group Kelly Blaney said: “Camberwell Murals is part of building the buzz around Camberwell.
“Encouraging people to explore more of our diverse area and attract new customers to our local businesses.”
An interactive QR code will be added to the mural later this month to provide visitors with a short history of music in Camberwell and play tracks like Mendelssohn’s ‘Spring Song’ – also known as ‘Camberwell Green’ – and ‘I live in Camberwell’ by the Basement Jaxx.
The project aims to cultivate interest in and support for the area, which the Camberwell Identity Group say is often overshadowed by neighbouring areas like Brixton and Peckham.
The new mural joins three others already installed in the hope of brightening perspectives on and prospects for the area.
