By Keerthana Syam
Old Kent Road will temporarily close for the safe transport of a super grid transformer.
The road will be closed between Devon Street and Ruby Street from 9pm-9pm this Saturday to Monday to ensure safety.
Traffic will be diverted via Queen’s Road (A202), Camberwell Road (A215), and New Kent Road (A201), with signs in place to guide road users.
Recommended diversion routes to access Old Kent Road from both directions will be in place during the closure.
Residents and local businesses have been notified of the planned road closure and diversion
The transformer is set for delivery in Southwark to reinforce the capital’s electricity network.
The delivery to New Cross substation is part of the £1billion London Power Tunnels 2 project.
The transformer will be delivered to the substation entrance from the Port of Tilbury under police escort.
Haulage expert Allelys will be manoeuvring the device on a specialist vehicle.
Kannan Mahalingam, project manager on the London Power Tunnels 2 project, said: “A lot of work goes into these essential equipment deliveries to ensure they arrive safely with minimal disruption.
“Our teams have been working closely with local and highways authorities to ensure a smooth operation.
“We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the local community whilst the work takes place.”
The 90-mile route will be from Tilbury docks clockwise around the M25 (with an M20 and M26) to junction 10, north-eastward on the A3 via Wandsworth and Lambeth.
And onward through Southwark to the substation site on Old Kent Road.
