One person hospitalised after ‘badly damaged’ high-rise flat fire less than a mile from Grenfell Tower

One person was hospitalised and another two treated at the scene following a fire in a high rise block.

The fire burnt out a flat on the 12th floor of a block in Queensdale Crescent, Shepherd’s Bush this morning, less than a mile from where the Grenfell Tower fire claimed 72 lives in 2017.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called at around 9.20am and needed 60 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) confirmed one person had been hospitalised.

LAS said: “We were called at 9.45am to reports of a fire at a block of flats on Queensdale Crescent.

“We sent resources to the scene, including two ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.

“Two patients were assessed at the scene and another was treated and taken to hospital.”

The LFB said it took more than 30 999 calls to the incident and the fire was under control by 10.55am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Station Commander David Bracewell, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters dealt with a fire on the 12th floor of a tower block in W11.

“Three people from the affected flat left before the brigade arrived. A number of other residents evacuated the building.

“Fire crews led six residents to safety via an internal staircase. Further residents who were not affected by fire, heat or smoke were advised to remain in their flats.

“In the early stages we used new technology called 9Eye that enabled a caller to send live stream videos of the incident straight into the brigade’s 999 call centre.

“We’ve also used a 32m turntable ladder to put water on the outside of the building.”
