Pancake flippers raise cash for Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice
Pancake flippin’ skills were in evidence at the Greenwich Market Pancake Races on Saturday and Tuesday.
Clive Bennett, Pearly King of Woolwich, and Gwen Jones, Greenwich Pearly Queen, oversaw proceedings on Saturday, and the competitive spirit ran high on both days between Blue Watch Greenwich Fire Brigade, The 106 (Y) Regiment Royal Artillery Grove Park, priests from St Alfege and Year 6 pupils from St Matthew School in Blackheath, traders, visitors, dog owners and many bemused tourists.
The winners were awarded medals, made by Laser Shed, a Greenwich Market Trader, and all racers enjoyed delicious pancakes expertly served by Meru Crepes and Galettes stall.
In total £191.51 was collected in lieu of race fees for the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.
A team of fire cadets ran a stall on Saturday, advising visitors on fire safety in the home.
Mick McCarthy, Blue Watch sub officer at Greenwich fire station, who was at the event, said: “It was great to be involved in today’s event and watching our cadets take part in the race was a funny sight, everyone enjoyed themselves and it was for a great cause to raise money for the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.
“Community events like this one are a great opportunity to speak to local residents about fire safety in the home – especially how to enjoy flipping their pancakes safely.”
