Parents urged to reclaim streets from the car in Greenwich

Children can reclaim their streets from the mighty motor – just by playing on them.

Families will be positively encouraged to have fun in their roads for a few hours and have fun outdoors – through a scheme that closes residential streets to through traffic for a few hours.

Greenwich council is blocking roads to cars in a scheme to turn back the clock and clean our air.

Greenwich council leader Cllr Danny Thorpe said: “Lots of families are looking for ways in which to reduce the time their children spend on personal devices, watching TV and online.

“What better way than to organise a Play Streets event and encourage everyone outdoors? It also builds community spirit, with parents and residents able to apply to close a street and act as marshals.”

Play Streets also promotes safer neighbourhoods, helps to reduce air pollution and encourages outdoor activity.

The deadline to apply for Play Streets events held this spring is February 29. To find out more and apply click here.
