Plumstead make merry…South-East London’s longest running festival are calling for help

Volunteers who organise one of South-east London’s longest-running community festival are calling for help and sponsors as the event may not take place next year.

More than 6,000 people attended this year’s Plumstead Make Merry festival which took place from noon to 6pm  on Saturday, June 9, on Plumstead Common.

The Make Merry has been running since 1975 and it is organised by community volunteers who give their time to ensure it continues.

Sarah Harper, chairwoman of the organising committee, said: “What an amazing day we have had bringing together our diverse community. 
“There were lots of happy people enjoying the sun and all that our local talent can offer.

“But without the help of our supporters and volunteers we may not survive for much longer.”

Sarah has been leading the volunteer work on the event for nine years.
She said: “More volunteers are always needed, so if you enjoyed yourself and want to help next year, get in touch.

“We are still in need of funds to stage next year’s event. The funding pays for the infrastructure, the stages, marquees, toilets etc.

“The organisers and stewards do not get paid, performers offer their talents for free and local organisations use the event as a great promotional tool. So every penny raised is used to ensure the festival happens.” The festival offered a day of music, arts and activities.

There was live music and dance performances across two stages, a children’s area with a variety of different activities for the under 11s, a cafe, fun fair, and an array of free workshops.

There were about 90 stalls from local groups and businesses.
