Police officer injured after moped driven at him before it crashed into lorry in Lewisham

A police officer was injured after a pair of thugs on a moped drove at him knocking him to the ground, before they crashed into a lorry.

At almost 8:30pm on Wednesday August 1, two officers on police motorcycles were on patrol in Brownhill Road, Lewisham, when they spotted a moped carrying two passengers.

As the police riders queued in slow moving traffic the rider of the moped sped up and drove directly at the officers, knocking him to the ground.

His bike then landed on his right leg.

The moped then sped off along Brownhill Road before crashing into a lorry.

The pair ran from the scene pursued by the unhurt officer. They ran in two different directions, but the rider was then caught by the officer and arrested on suspicion of robbery, aggravated taking and driving away, assault on police and failing to stop.

The moped had been reported as being stolen earlier that day from an address and was recovered.

The 15-year-old was taken into custody at a south London police station where he remains.

The moped was recovered from the scene and inquiries are ongoing to trace the other passenger.

The lorry and driver were inspected by officers from the Met’s Commercial Vehicle Unit and the driver was not reported for any offences and he has fully cooperated with the investigation.

The injured officer was was treated at the scene by London Ambulance service and is now off duty recovering at home.
