Queen Elizabeth II death: When will King Charles address the nation and how to watch?

Today begins the first day of a new monarch for the first time in 70 years as King Charles III takes over from Queen Elizabeth II, who died last night in her Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The King will make his way from Scotland to London today to meet with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss, and is expected to make an announcement to the nation this evening.

The new King is expected to address the nation at 6pm today. It is widely expected to be broadcast on the BBC, as well as Sky News and other news channels.

It comes as a period of mourning began today for the Queen, and plans to lay her to rest are finalised.

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey in central London, with the likely date being Monday, September 19.

It is likely to be declared a bank holiday.
