Rapid Covid tests offered at second Lewisham testing site

Lewisham council will now be offering rapid Covid-19 tests to asymptomatic residents that need to leave home for work.

A second test centre is due to open at The Green Man, Downham on Monday, January 25, for Lewisham residents without coronavirus symptoms.

The decision follows advice that those working outside of their home, volunteering in the community or coming into contact with customers, are thought to be more at risk of spreading the virus.

Rapid, or lateral flow, tests identifies those individuals who may have Covid-19 without symptoms.

The council urged residents to help protect each other by getting tested, as 1 in 3 people who have coronavirus have no symptoms – meaning they could be spreading the virus without realising and putting their friends and families at risk.

Dr Catherine Mbema, Director of Public Health for Lewisham said: “Since we introduced rapid testing in Lewisham, we’ve offered thousands of tests to people who must leave their home during national lockdown, volunteers and those who are caring for people in their homes.

“For anyone who has to leave their home for work, this has proved really valuable in helping to quickly identify positive cases and stop the spread of the virus.”

Appointments are available everyday (including weekends), 10am – 4pm. You must have an appointment to get tested.

Test appointments must be booked in advance. Some walk-in slots may be available but residents have been asked to check the website before coming to a Rapid Test Centre.

Gemma, who is supporting the Covid-19 response in Lewisham said: “I had a rapid test on Friday at the Civic Suite in Catford.

“I was able to get an appointment quickly and once there, the whole process was very quick and easy. I was really impressed with how helpful the staff at the centre were.”
