Residents warned of rising Ravensbourne River in Greenwich, Lewisham and Bromley amid storm warnings this afternoon
A flood alert is in place across south-east London this afternoon, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to arrive from 4pm today.
Areas surrounding the Ravensbourne, which passes through Lewisham, Bromley and Greenwich, have been warned it could rise and flood properties.
Intense rainfall is forecast from in the next two hours, possibly bursting the river’s banks.
A Flood information service spokesperson said: “While uncertainty remains around exact timings and which areas will experience the heaviest rain there is a possibility that rivers could respond quickly and overtop their banks.
“Flooding to low lying land, roads and riverside gardens is possible. Surface water flooding may also affect low lying areas.
“We recommend you monitor local weather conditions. You should avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
“We are monitoring rainfall and river levels and are checking rivers for blockages.”
The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning across South London, with the extreme weather expected to continue in the night.
