School children warm up lunch breaks at Borough Market soup sale

Secondary school pupils will be warming up people’s lunch breaks on Thursday with a Winter Soup Sale at Borough Market.

The annual soup sale – now in its 12th year – has taught more than 3,635 pupils how to create winter soups using seasonal vegetables, which are then judged by a special panel of food experts, before the top recipes are selected to be sold at London’s iconic food market by London Bridge.

This year the schools taking part include Bacon’s College in Timber Pond Road, Rotherhithe, Swanlea School in Brady Street, Whitechapel, St Gabriel’s College in Langton Road, Camberwell, and City of London Academy, in Lynton Road, Bermondsey.

The event forms part of the Young Marketeers Programme – a partnership between Borough Market and School Food Matters – which teaches pupils how to avoid food waste and eat seasonally.

All of the money from the students’ sales is donated to The Felix Project, which supports vulnerable people across the capital. Every £1 made provides food for four meals to those in need.
