Two shops have been fined £1,500 after dumping commercial waste on a busy street.

Damascus Bride and Abwab Global were fined after dumping bits of food, cardboard and crates on Edgware Road without the correct paperwork.

Damascus Bride, a restaurant and bakery, was fined £505 while Abwab Global Limited was hit with a £1025 fine.

The council opened an investigation after their bin men were being forced to collect commercial waste piled up on Edgware Road.

Under current rules, businesses have to hire private commercial waste firms to pick up their trash.

When investigators asked the owners to provide a Waste Transfer Notice, they failed to hand over the correct information and were eventually fined for breaching Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

When they failed to pay, they were taken to Westminster Magistrates’ Court where their cases were heard on June 7 and August 30.

Westminster council said it approached the businesses multiple times with advice to help them become compliant.

Legally, businesses need a Waste Transfer Note for every piece of non-hazardous trash that leaves the premises.

The council said since April, they have issued 365 fines to residents and businesses who have carelessly dumped waste on Westminster streets.

Westminster cllr Paul Dimoldenberg, cabinet member for city management and air quality, said: “Making sure Westminster’s streets stay clean and safe for residents remains the council’s top priority.

“These fines highlight the importance of making sure businesses follow the proper guidelines for preparing waste in a safe and hygienic manner ready for collection. I’m pleased see the work of our city inspectors has been vindicated.

“We provide a quick and affordable service for businesses and residents to dispose of bulky waste so there is no excuse to carelessly dump it on the side of the street. If you don’t meet our standards, be prepared to face the consequences”.
