South London Press guide to our constituencies – Dulwich and West Norwood

By Kit Heren

Dulwich and West Norwood has been a safe Labour seat since its creation in 1997.

Current MP Helen Hayes is running again in 2019.

Candidates

Jonathan Bartley (Green Party)

Jonathan Bartley is the leader of the Green Party in England and Wales.

He has described the climate emergency as his most pressing focus if he were to be elected. He believes that remaining in the EU is the most effective way of tackling climate change.

The Liberal Democrats have stood aside their candidate for the constituency as part of a pact to raise the chances of as many ‘remain-focused’ MPs being elected as possible.

Helen Hayes (Labour)

First elected to parliament in 2015, Helen Hayes increased her majority by over 15% in the 2017 election.

Hayes is strongly anti-Brexit, and has named other priorities as campaigning against the government’s ‘hostile environment’ immigration policy, increasing housebuilding and fighting climate change.

Jane Lyons (Conservative)

Jane Lyons was a local councillor in the area until 2018. She is now the CEO of a cancer charity and has previously run her own business.

A previous Remain voter herself, Lyon has spoken of the need to pass a Brexit deal and focus on domestic issues, such as investment in the NHS.

Julia Stephenson (Brexit Party)

Julia Stephenson is a former Green Party parliamentary candidate, environmental and animal rights activist and published author.

John Plume (Ukip)

The UK Independence Party calls for “complete and total withdrawal from the European Union” and reduced immigration into the UK. It also wants to increase house building and create more grammar schools, which it describes as a proven way of ensuring social mobility for working class people.

Anthony Hodgson (Christian Peoples Alliance)

Anthony Hodgson is running on a pro-life platform. Other policies include being in favour of Brexit, but with another referendum in five years. His party also believes “natural marriage” is between a man and a woman.
