South London Press guide to our constituencies – Streatham

The current MP is Chuka Umunna, who was previously a member of the Labour party. He left to form Change UK with other centrist MPs in 2019, before joining the Liberal Democrats later in the year.

He is no longer standing in Streatham, so the constituency will have a new MP. The seat has been held by Labour since 1992, when they won it from the Conservative party.

Candidates

Bell Ribeiro Addy (Labour)

Bell Ribeiro Addy was previously a key political advisor to shadow home Secretary Dianne Abbott.

According to her biography, she wants to transform the workplace for women and workers more generally. and is an avid supporter of workers’ rights. Ribeiro Addy is a member of Unite the Nation, the UK’s biggest trade union, and Amnesty International.

Scott Ainslie (Green)

Scott Ainslie has been an MEP for London since 2019 and a member of Lambeth council since 2014.

Ainslie will campaign for a second EU referendum and to stay in, to protect the environment and to boost investment in public services.

Penelope Becker (Brexit Party)

The Brexit Party wants the UK to leave the European Union and trade on World Trade Organisation terms.

Rory O’Broin (Conservative)

Rory O’ Broin is a former corporate lawyer and has been a Conservative councillor for the borough of Wandsworth since 2016.

He promises to be tough on crime, boost investment for schools and the environment and advocate for business rates reform to support local businesses.

Helen Thompson (Liberal Democrats)

Helen Thompson was a civil servant until 2016, where he she helped negotiate on behalf of the UK with various countries, including Afghanistan.

Her priorities as candidate are remaining in the EU, helping end climate change and curb air pollution in London and tackling youth violence in the constituency.
