Southwark Tube station closed after major water main bursts
Repairs and road diversions are likely to last until next week after a major water main burst in Southwark causing severe flooding.
More than 30 properties and an area greater than the size of a football pitch was affected by flooding at the junction of Blackfriars Road and Union Street on Tuesday morning.
Southwark station was forced to close as London Fire Brigade firefighters attempted to stem the flow.
Borough Commander Richard Tapp, who was at the scene, said: The burst water main caused significant flooding in a very busy area,
“Southwark Tube station was closed and there were also several local road closures in place which had an impact on traffic.
“Some road closures remain in place and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.”
Residents as far away as Camberwell reported affected water services.
A Thames Water statement said: “We’re working around the clock to fix the burst pipe that happened early on Tuesday.
“Our repairs are likely to continue into next week.
“The area is open again to pedestrians and cyclists, but traffic diversions will remain in place during our work – you can find more information at TFL
“We’re sorry to customers whose water was disrupted, and to rail passengers who couldn’t access Southwark Tube station, which has now reopened.”
