Students awash with great deeds for their communities are lavished with deserving praise

Students from 17 schools gathered for the annual Bromley Borough Rotary Youth Awards – with 36 young people recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community.

The event at The Langley Performing Arts Centre, Park Langley, Beckenham, was attended by scores of families, Rotarians and local dignitaries.

Winners came from across Bromley were presented with a certificate, a voucher and ticket to watch Bromley Football Club by Cllr Dr David Barrington-Jefferys, Bromley’s Mayor.

Among those gaining plaudits for their work were young carers who look after family members with crippling medical conditions. Others work in local care homes or have raised considerable sums for Cancer Research, Save the Children and other charities.

Some helped build a school in Tanzania. Several award winners are members of the Bromley Youth Council and others have set up their own charities.

Another pupil project-managed a charity run from Paris to St Andrews which raised £24,000, while one helps provide hot meals for the homeless.

Others help out at local schools which serve children with complex needs and we had a volunteer at Bethlem Hospital and another who works with autistic children.

The Bromley Borough Rotary Youth Awards started 10 years ago with four schools participating. This year nominations from 20 schools were received.

The ages of the winners ranged from 11 to 18. Commendation certificates went to more students for activities the children have done outside of school for their families, their local communities and the world at large.

The winners were: Aminat Adekanme, Layla Allen, Maria Chenery, Millie Choy, Sofia Wilson, Oliver Copus, Laura Cox, Jacob Fenwick-Read, Lily Francis, Amelia Freeman, Lachlann Pearce, Rowan Godsell, Gabrielle Grey, Oliver Gustafik, Zyana Haider, Alex Hamblin, Sophie Li, Amelia Johnson, Arunima Karve, Freya Keable, Amaan Miah, Bleddyn Mottershead, Pierreice Powell, Rene Powell, Aneesh Sagar, Ojal Sangle, Preciuus Shaumba, Gabriella Smaizyte, Eythan, Soysa, Chloe Stevens, Pamoda Vitharana, Jade Warwick, Christopher Welch, Charlotte Weller, Aoife West, and Thomas Williamson.
