Students help boost biodiversity at Denmark Hill railway station

A group of students spent the day planting wildflowers and picking up litter in a bid to help improve biodiversity at a railway station.

To mark National Meadows Day on Saturday, a group of 17 Year 12 students from Dulwich College joined residents on Friday at Denmark Hill railway station to plant wildflowers.

In an effort to improve biodiversity in the Denmark Hill community, the students also laid down compost with coffee grounds from a local cafe and installed a new bug hotel.

Fiona Angel, senior deputy headteacher at Dulwich College, said: “The students and teachers alike are delighted to be involved in the wildflower planting day and help to improve the biodiversity in the Denmark Hill community.

“It’s a great chance for them to put knowledge into action and learn first-hand how we can work together to look after the planet.”

Govia Thameslink Railway, the station operator, is working with London Wildlife Trust Consultancy to carry out ecological surveys at a number of sites this year, where they will be monitoring, improving and enhancing biodiversity and encouraging customers and local community groups to do the same.

Jason Brooker, head of environment at Govia Thameslink Railway, said: “Hosting community days like this highlights the little things we can all do to help the planet.

“Planting wildflowers is a great way to boost biodiversity at our stations and provides an opportunity for the local community to get involved.

“It’s fantastic to be installing even more bug hotels across the network, as these support insects such as bees, butterflies and caterpillars, which are vital for the ecosystem.”
