TfL begins second phase of safety and accessibility upgrades in Nine Elms

By Keerthana Syam

Transport for London (TfL) has started its second phase of work bringing significant developments and improvements to Battersea.

The work in Nine Elms Lane and Battersea Park Road will start on April 28, and will take place between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday, with some Sunday and night-time work expected.

This will include upgraded bus stops, 1.6km of cycleways, improved pedestrian crossings and wider footways, along with new bus shelters, more cycle stands, benches, improved drainage systems and 24 new trees.

Julie Lewington, head of projects and programmes at TfL, said: “These works are a significant step in the regeneration of the area and will improve accessibility and safety for the people cycling in this busy location.

“Roads in the surrounding area are expected to be busier than usual, so please plan ahead and check before you travel.

“We’d like to thank local residents for their patience while these works are taking place.

Several changes to traffic flow will be required, including lane closures and temporary banned right turns into and out of side and access roads.

A ban on left turn from Wandsworth Road into Nine Elms Lane will also be in place.

Cringle Street will be restricted to southbound traffic between Kirtling Street and Battersea Park Road.

Temporary traffic management will be in effect 24/7 throughout the week during the main phases of the works.

Bus stops will remain open as well as access to homes and businesses.

At some stages of the works, bus stops and pedestrian crossings will be moved to nearby temporary locations.

Temporary cycle lanes will be provided where possible.

The initiative is expected to be completed by autumn 2026.
