The Met ‘discover’ documents linked to Daniel Morgan murder case in locked cabinet

The Met has revealed it recently “discovered” documents connected to the decades-old unsolved murder case of private investigator Daniel Morgan, who was brutally killed with an axe in a Sydenham car park.

The police force said the “paperwork was found in a locked cabinet that had not been used for a number of years at New Scotland Yard”.

It comes after an independent review in 2021, which itself took eight years to conclude, found the way the Met had handled the 1987 murder case and the investigation in the decades after was corrupt and incompetent.

Allegations of police involvement in the murder and a cover up, as well as connections between private investigators, police officers and journalists at the now defunct News of the World were exposed in the review.

The Met confirmed some of the newly discovered material should have been used in the review.

Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray said: “We fully acknowledge how unacceptable and deeply regrettable this situation is.

“We are working to understand what has taken place and any impact. We apologise to the family of Daniel Morgan and to the Panel.”

The Met said the documents were found in January and an assessment started in February to consider whether any should have been disclosed.

A total of 95 pages of material, amounting to 37 documents, have been initially identified that would have been given to the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel for the review.

There were a further 71 pages, totalling 23 documents, that would have been provided to His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services as part of their inspection following the review.

The Met said its assessment is that there are no evidential documents that relate to criminal investigations into the murder.

The Met added that it had written to the family of Daniel Morgan to explain the situation and outline next steps.

Daniel Morgan’s family representatives have been approached for comment.
