Three Lewisham schools selected for climate-friendly energy-saving grants
Following the council’s successful bid for funding, three Lewisham schools have been selected for the Mayor of London’s Greener Schools pilot programme designed to reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions.
Stillness Infant School and Stillness Juniors School at Brockley Rise and Baring Primary School, Linchmere Road, have been chosen to take part in the pilot, alongside 35 other schools spanning a total of 16 London boroughs.
A grant of £226,000 has been allocated for the authority to share out between the schools.
Locally, the schools will use the funding to install solar panels to deliver clean power. This will not only unlock significant environmental benefits, but it will reduce costs, allowing the money to be reinvested back into the classroom.
The local authority will also be working with the schools to develop longer term plans to cut carbon and deliver environmental benefits.
Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, councillor Louise Krupski, who is the cabinet member for environment, transport and climate action, said: “I am delighted to work with the Mayor of London and his team to decarbonise our local schools.
“This funding will not only unlock significant environmental benefits but will also create opportunities to reinvest savings from energy bills into the classroom. This is an excellent example of climate action in practice.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This investment will help schools reduce their energy costs so they can spend more on vital resources such as books, technology and staff and cut carbon emissions so schools can play their part in tackling air pollution in the capital.
“Working with the boroughs, we’ve been able to leverage a further £9.6m to fund more vital projects in more schools, helping to meet our target of achieving net zero by 2030, as we continue working to build a greener and fairer London for everyone.”
