Transport for London wants to encourage more women to its workforce

Transport for London (TfL) marked International Women’s Day on Friday with a range of activities aimed at enticing more women into the transport sector and engineering roles.

The organisation – one of the capital’s biggest employers – said it believed it has made good progress when it comes to encouraging more women to take up roles that have not traditionally had a big female take-up.

Six new internship placements for women will be introduced this summer as part of TfL’s new Women in Bus and Coach initiative.

TfL’s Women into Transportation and Engineering pre-employment programme (WiTnE) will offer up to 20 women the opportunity to experience working within transport and engineering later this year.

Also, the Women’s Staff Network will host a series of talks this month, celebrating the role of women at TfL.

The London Transport Museum hosted an event to spotlight the jobs women do to keep London moving.

A company spokesman said: “TfL actively working to improve representation at all levels within its business through a range of different interventions.

“These include addressing any barriers that prevent women from advancing to senior and higher-paying positions, particularly in operational areas.”

Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said: “The Mayor and TfL are committed to diversifying and strengthening TfL’s workforce and are working hard to attract more women to the transport and engineering sectors.”

Patricia Obinna, TfL’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion, said: “We want to show that Transport for London offers women varied and rewarding career opportunities, and we hope that our efforts to do this will help women to see that every role at TfL is open to them.”
