Twelve firefighting crews mobilised to keep Tooting housing block fire in check

About 35 people were forced to evacuate a block of flats in Tooting this morning after a fire broke out, damaging half a first-floor flat and gutting a second-floor flat and roof.

Twelve fire engines and about 80 firefighters tackled the blaze in Woodley Close today.

The residents had all left the building before firefighters arrived. A woman and child were treated by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) at the scene for smoke inhalation.

A 32-metre and 64-metre turntable ladder were both deployed at the scene as water towers, allowing firefighters to tackle the fire from above.

The fire produced a significant amount of smoke and people in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while crews responded.

A respite centre has been set up at St Barnabus Church in coordination with Wandsworth council and the brigade’s Community Engagement team.

Control officers received the first of 15 calls about the fire shortly before 8.40am and the fire was brought under control by just before 11.40am. Crews from Tooting, Wimbledon, Norbury, West Norwood and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
