Three fire engines and about 15 firefighters tackled a fire at a house in Birkbeck Place, Tulse Hill.
Half of the lower ground floor of a three-storey terraced house was damaged by fire.
A woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews suffering from smoke inhalation.
Two children left the property before firefighters arrived.
The fire brigade was called at around 6.40pm and the fire was under control by 8.45 pm.
Fire engines from West Norwood and Brixton fire stations attended the scene.
The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical item coming into contact with a cooking hob that had been accidentally switched on.
