Yachtsman prepares to sail the Atlantic after trip was delayed due to coronavirus

A yachtsman attempting to sail 3,200 miles across the Atlantic single-handed has announced his delayed trip for later this month, or early in July.

Michael Hurley, of Red Lion Lane, Shooters Hill, had to postpone his trip from New York to Gibraltar, from May1 until August  – but is now hoping to do it sooner.

The destination has been changed to Plymouth because a passage to Gibraltar would not be possible amid lockdown.

The route from New York to Plymouth will pass along a latitude considerably north of the original planned course.

The Across Alone Campaign, aboard the 32ft 1967 sloop Nevermore, is expected to take three to six weeks, depending on conditions, and arrive in Plymouth Harbour almost 400 years to the day after the Pilgrim fathers set out from Plymouth for America aboard the Mayflower.

The voyage will raise cash for The Ahoy Centre in London and Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating in Annapolis, Maryland.
