Plans for more than 1,000 flats and Sainsbury’s superstore next to New Cross Gate railway station are scrapped due to Bakerloo line extension

Plans which could have got in the way of one of the proposed sites for Transport for London (TfL)’s Bakerloo line extension have been scrapped.
TfL is planning to extend the Bakerloo line from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate.
But A2Dominion and Mount Anvil, along with Sainsbury’s, applied to build a new superstore and 1,161 flats in towers reaching 33 storeys by New Cross Gate railway station.
Earlier this year the developers submitted a planning application and suggested another site in New Cross for the extension instead.
Now a Sainsbury’s spokeswoman has said the uncertainty around TfL’s plans made progressing the project “unfeasible”.
The plans included apartment blocks of up to 33 storeys in an area where the average building height is two to three storeys.
The supermarket, petrol station and three retail warehouses on site – Dreams, Harvey’s Furniture and TK Maxx – would have been knocked down.
A spokeswoman said: “As a partnership we worked very hard to produce a scheme that would regenerate the New Cross Gate community, delivering high quality new homes, a significant quantum of affordable housing, a modern flagship supermarket, and high calibre green spaces.
“We have always supported the Bakerloo line extension, however the uncertainty around its delivery has meant that progressing our project is unfeasible.
“We have therefore agreed not to pursue the application any further.”
