Root and Shoots 40th anniversary celebration of flora returns at Kennington greenery
An annual autumn festival returns from its pandemic hibernation to offer a window into the world of bees, flowers and birds.
The Roots and Shoots Goes Wild Open Day is at Walnut Tree Walk, Kennington, on Sunday, October 9 from 11am until 4pm.
Always a hugely popular community event, this year’s festival is particularly special as it celebrates the 40th anniversary of this much-loved oasis of greenery into the inner city.
It has also changed the lives of hundreds of young people – mainly from Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth – who look to alternatives to the conventional education and are taken on in a biodiversity training programme.
It’s an exuberant family event, with something to delight all ages. There will be a birds of prey display, beekeeper and floristry demonstrations, a magical mechanical dragon, children’s storytelling, face painting and art workshops.
Stalls will be selling arts, crafts, accessories, jewellery, ceramics and plants, as well as homemade cakes, BBQ sausages and candy floss.
Roots and Shoots director and founder Linda Phillips, said: “It’s been an incredible 40 years since Roots and Shoots first opened its doors back in 1982.
“This couldn’t have happened without the support of the fantastic community around us in Lambeth, and we’re so pleased to be back with an Open Day to see you all again.”
Admission: £2 for adults, children free. Cash only on the gate.
