‘A mad finish’ – Dons come from two goals down to secure late point in Accrington draw
AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson believed his side merited at least a point as they fought from two goals down late on to pick up a 2-2 draw with Accrington on Tuesday night.
The best chance of the first half fell to Matty Stevens after Callum Maycock clipped the ball back into the box.
But the former Forest Green man was unable to arrow his shot beyond former Everton stopper Billy Crellin.
Jackson’s side should have taken the lead in the 52nd minute when James Furlong managed to apply the finishing touch to Josh Neufville’s low drive along the face of goal.
Accrington made the Dons pay when Joe Pigott had the ball taken off him on the counter-attack and Nelson Khumbeni curled a shot into Owen Goodman’s top left-hand corner.
Dara Costelloe thought he wrapped up all three points for the visitors in the 75th minute as the Dons fell to back-to-back home league defeats for the first time this season.
Alistair Smith pulled one back with a volley from the edge of the box in the 88th minute.
And James Tilley secured a point in the 97th minute when he cut inside on his right foot and rifled a shot from distance beyond the Stanley keeper to secure a point.
“It was a mad finish,” said Jackson.
“Once you analyse the incidents in the game, I feel as though it was the least we deserved with the balance of play and the chances we created.
“We weren’t at our best at all, but they kept going after it looked like the game was gone.
“We got what we deserved. A few things have gone against us and we missed a good chance before they scored their first.
“How we haven’t had one penalty as well. When you factor all that in, we deserve that.
“We haven’t always got what we deserved this season. It’s a good point.”
