Adam Barrett set to stay at Millwall as part of Joe Edwards’ backroom team

Adam Barrett is set to stay as part of Millwall’s backroom set-up – with Joe Edwards to be confirmed as the Championship club’s new head coach at the start of this week.

We revealed in Episode Four of the South London Press Football Podcast that the current caretaker manager will not be leaving.

Edwards, 37, will also bring in Andy Myers, Chelsea’s loan player technical coach.

Barrett was on the same UEFA Pro License coaching course as Myers and Edwards wants him to remain on his team.

The former Crystal Palace and Southend United centre-back stepped in on a temporary basis to handle first-team affairs after Gary Rowett left by mutual consent last month.

Barrett’s final match as caretaker saw the Lions lose 1-0 to Southampton, Ryan Fraser’s stoppage-time goal ensuring he did not finish with a point.

Millwall’s players are off today and will have their first training session under Edwards tomorrow.

Edwards had a 27-year association with Chelsea, first joining their coaching ranks at the age of 19 – winning the FA Youth Cup twice and also back-to-back runners-up finishes in the UEFA Youth League.

Edwards also managed the Blues in the EFL Trophy and they only missed out on reaching the Wembley final after a semi-final penalty shootout defeat to Lincoln City – the furthest any Premier League academy team has gone in the tournament.

He quit the Blues to become assistant manager to Frank Lampard at Everton. Edwards was promoted on to Chelsea’s first-team coaching staff when the former England international took charge. He stayed at that level when Thomas Tuchel succeeded Lampard, the German going on to lead Chelsea to Champions League victory.

Edwards is currently England U20 head coach.
