AFC Wimbledon chief confirms Newcastle friendly offer
Managing director James Woodroof has confirmed that AFC Wimbledon have offered Newcastle United the opportunity to play a friendly at Plough Lane in the summer.
The Dons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Tuesday night as the Premier League side progressed to the last 16 of the EFL Cup.
League Two Wimbledon were set to host Eddie Howe’s side at Plough Lane on September 24, but extensive rainfall saw the River Wandle burst its banks and caused damage to the stadium and pitch.
The cup tie was quickly switched to up north and Newcastle also donated £15,000 to the JustGiving page set up by Wimbledon fans to help the club.
Jackson’s side put on a strong display as 1,500 fans headed up to St James’ Park on short notice.
Woodroof told Chronicle Live: “There is an open invitation to Newcastle to come for a pre-season friendly with us. Whatever it would look like.
“We would love to continue this relationship. We wanted to be ambitious and turn Newcastle over to face Chelsea, but we have a very strong team, and we are really hopeful.
“We’d love to host Newcastle in years to come. It is a great question we will put that to Eddie Howe.”
