AFC Wimbledon defeat is final straw for Swindon boss Sheridan as he quits

Swindon Town manager John Sheridan revealed he was going to resign after their heavy defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

The Dons won 4-1 at Plough Lane. Sheridan told BBC Wiltshire Sport: “I’m going to have a break now. I’m watching it, week in and week out, and we’re getting beaten. It’s not right for the supporters. We have made life very difficult for ourselves. Five or six games ago when we beat Fleetwood, I felt there was a little chance where we may have turned a corner but we didn’t, we went the other way.

“Too many things are happening week in, week out. So I’m going to give it a rest now. Some people will be pleased, I’m sure a lot of people will be pleased. I’m going to look at my position, I’ll speak to the chairmen and I’m going to give it a miss. I’m going to resign.”

Sheridan blasted his side for the way they defended in their defeat against the Dons.

“It’s similar to a lot of our performances with the amount of goals we concede. I felt like we actually started the game really brightly. We had a brilliant opportunity to take the lead, but then it’s the same old story – we can’t defend.

“I’m not on about our back four or the keeper, I’m on about the team. They make so many little errors that lead to corners or silly free-kicks. Even before they scored we were giving them cheap corners and free-kicks.

“You could just see little things that were creeping in to the game that would give them opportunities to score goals. They’re on a good run and they’re effective at what they do. It could have possibly been 6-3, we had some very good chances but at the end of the day, I’ve got too look at myself and ask did I pick the right team? Also the players have also got to look at themselves.”
