Neil Harris has revealed he told the Millwall players on the first day of pre-season that Alex Pearce was the new club captain – even though it was only announced earlier this week.
The former Reading and Derby centre-back, 30, takes over the armband from Steve Morison, who has joined Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.
Harris told the South London Press: “I told the players on the first day of pre-season that Alex Pearce was the club captain. So they had known since June and word didn’t get out.
“Club captain doesn’t mean Pearcey plays every minute of games, like Stevie did last season. He was the best man to lead the dressing room. He is the man who sets the standards.
“I’ve had two really good captains in Tony Craig and Steve Morison. Pearcey is slightly different. He has not got that Millwall know-how but he’ll learn. He’s a winner and a competitor.
“I think the fans have seen enough already to know he has old-school values. He’s very much appreciated by the football club.”
