Are Dons in the market for a free agent signing outside of the transfer window?
Johnnie Jackson is not ruling out bolstering his AFC Wimbledon squad by bringing in a free agent.
The Dons saw a deadline day move for Charlton Athletic midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey collapse, but they did sign Bristol City defender Ryley Towler on a season-long loan before the summer transfer window closed.
Jackson’s side spent money on two signings over the summer, bringing in Josh Davison, 22, from Charlton for a club-record fee thought to be in the region of £160,000 and Harry Pell, 30, from Accrington Stanley.
Wimbledon sold Jack Rudoni to Huddersfield Town for a club-record fee and also let Luke McCormick depart for Bristol Rovers.
Wimbledon were forced to sign free agent goalkeeper Will Jaaskelainen on a short one-month contract to act as cover and competition to Nik Tzanev after Nathan Broome picked up a foot injury in the 2-1 EFL Trophy win against Aston Villa U21s.
“Possibly,” responded Jackson when asked about looking to bring in an unattached player. “We won’t do anything for the sake of it, but if we feel there is something that is going to help us, make us stronger, then we will look at it.”
After their 2-0 home defeat to Northampton Town on Tuesday night, Wimbledon have gone three games on the bounce in League Two without a win or scoring a goal.
“We’re a work in progress,” said Jackson. “It’s a new group on the back of a really difficult season. We have got a lot to work on and to try and turn around here. I believe in the group. In moments in every game we look a good side, but in small moments we keep letting ourselves down. Players have to take that responsibility, and we have to help them as staff.
“We’re better than our points tally and position. In every single game that we have played, even in defeat, we have been well in the games.
“Football is about scoring goals, and we’re not putting it in the net. It just feels like it’s going against you, but you have to keep working hard and believing in what you’re doing. It will turn.”
