Brighton not set to be at full strength for EFL Cup tie against Charlton

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has indicated he will not play some of his senior players in tonight’s EFL Cup tie at Charlton Athletic.

The Albion look as if they will approach the match as a final tune-up before returning to Premier League action on Boxing Day.

The Addicks are the only London club left in the competition but are on a poor run of form. Caretaker manager Anthony Hayes will take charge for one last time before handing over the reins to Dean Holden, who was appointed on Tuesday.

Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been given two weeks off after his exertions for World Cup winners in Qatar.

“I want to give Billy Gilmour the chance to show what he can do, Julio Enciso and Levi Colwill are the same,” said De Zerbi. “Deniz Undav scored two goals against Villa in Dubai and is in a good moment. I have to give everyone an opportunity.

“Danny Welbeck and Adam Webster won’t be missing for too long, but they won’t be ready in time for Charlton.”

Winger Solly March said: “If you look at the draw there are only a couple of the big teams left in it. It’s the last-16 so if you beat Charlton, it will be a tough game, it is a chance to get to Wembley.

“Everyone is taking it really seriously, for sure.

“I’ve got good memories of playing at Charlton. The atmosphere will be good and we’ll have a full away crowd. It’s an exciting game to start again.”
