Brixton’s Dillian Whyte and Dominic Breazeale ordered to fight for WBC “interim” title

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered Dillian Whyte and Dominic Breazeale to fight – with the winner claiming an “interim” title.

The Mexican-based governing body appear to have created a belt which means the victor is waiting in the wings for a crack at their word champion Deontay Wilder.

American Wilder is expected to rematch Tyson Fury after their draw at the end of last year.

Brixton’s Whyte holds the WBC Silver title.

He had been in negotiations over an April rematch with Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium but rejected the terms offered by Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn.

Whyte has talked about moving himself into the position of mandatory challenger so that he can get a straight crack at a world title – removing a champion from being able to negotiate a rematch.

It seems likely that Matchroom would win the purse bids for the bout, with the talk even before this development that Whyte would box at Greenwich’s 02 Arena against either Breazeale, Alexander Povetkin or Luis Ortiz.

Whyte appeared to welcome the latest development on his Twitter site.
