Charlton 2 Rochdale 1 – Jake Forster-Caskey double seals victory for Addicks
Jake Forster-Caskey’s double extended Charlton’s unbeaten run to nine matches in League One.
Matthew Gillam had put Rochdale into an early lead at The Valley and they hit the post through Matthew Done – the ball coming back off the inside of the left post and across the face of goal.
That let-off was a major boost to a listless home side, who needed a spot of fortune to level up before the break.
Jay Dasilva’s cross took a deflection into the path of Forster-Caskey, who reacted quicker than goalkeeper Joshua Lillis to prod home.
The midfielder showed quick reactions to claim his fifth goal of the campaign early in the second half.
Lillis spilled Marshall’s low drive and Forster-Caskey scooped into the net.
Charlton improved after the restart – not hard considering how ineffectual they were in the opening 45 minutes – and Ahmed Kashi had struck the right post with a solid hit from the edge of the box shortly before the South London club took the lead.
Karlan Ahearne-Grant headed Magennis’ cross straight at Lillis but the Addicks’ inability to open up a two-goal cushion left Rochdale still in the mix to grab an equaliser and Amos made an excellent close-range tip over to deny Ian Henderson and then had to fly to his left to push away Bradden Inman’s effort.
