Charlton Athletic assistant coach unable to provide major detail on winger’s injury situation

Charlton Athletic assistant coach Scott Marshall was unable to provide any major detail on Diallang Jaiyesimi’s injury sustained in last night’s EFL Trophy defeat at Colchester.

The attacker was wearing a protective boot after being forced off in the first half.

Marshall said: “It’s a precaution. We’re a little bit concerned that he had to come off. We’ll see how he is and hopefully it will settle quickly.

“I think it’s his ankle that he rolled but I’m not sure 100 per cent. There were a number of challenges that maybe the ref could’ve nipped in the bud a little bit earlier and set a bit of a precedent.  It is what it is, you’ve got to stand up to that and compete against it. But when guys come off injured it’s not great.”

Albie Morgan had put the Addicks ahead in the 12th minute. But late goals from Tom Eastman and John Akinde turned the contest around as United maintained their 100 per cent start in the competition and went top of Group I.

Jack Payne saw his penalty saved when Charlton led 1-0.

“We created enough chances to be out of sight so that in the last 5-10 minutes it is not a thing that is possible,” said Marshall. “That’s going to be the frustrating thing this evening, we got a bit of a suckerpunch.

“It was a great goal by Albie and the build-up to the goal was really good, there was some great play around the box to create the situation and Albie tucked it away really well. We had two or three more situations like that and the keeper has made a great save or it has gone the wrong side of the post for us.

“We dominated large parts of the game. We’re a young team and they will be all the better from the experience of the last 5-10 minutes in the long run. At the moment it’s a bit of a sore one, losing the game in the last couple of minutes is always difficult to take.

“It was a good double save from Jack.”

Charlton have not won since a 3-0 success over Gillingham in the EFL Trophy at the end of August.

But Marshall rejected any suggestion that the Addicks could do with a boost in confidence. He responded: “I don’t think there is any problem with confidence. We had a good training session this morning with a number of lads who weren’t involved tonight and we’re really pleased with what happened there.

“It’s a five-minute suckerpunch. If we came away with a 1-0 win then everyone would be saying what a fantastic performance, it could’ve been three or four. On the night it has not turned out that way. We’ve got to dust ourselves down, keep working away and make sure we do things a little bit better.”
