Charlton Athletic boss Nigel Adkins outlines playing plan for new signing Sean Clare
Charlton boss Nigel Adkins has confirmed that his plan is to solely use Sean Clare in midfield.
The Addicks signed the 24-year-old from Oxford United for an undisclosed fee.
When Clare was acquuired by the U’s in 2020, they were looking to play him as an attacking right-back.
Clare, who spent time in the Addicks academy, impressed on loan for Burton Albion in the second half of the previous campaign in the middle of the park.
“Sean has been identified well by our recruitment department,” Adkins told the South London Press. “I’m looking for a very athletic side – and I want a big side as well.
““Sean fits a lot of criteria and has been at Charlton before. He is a good personality and at a good age. I’m looking forward to getting to work with him.”
“It would be nice for every player to have the capability to play in, or have an understanding, of playing in different roles within the team and not only play one position. But predominantly we’re bringing him in to play in midfield.
“We have got two very good right-backs at the football club in Chris Gunter and Adam Matthews, who I’m really pleased with.
“In a small squad you need to be adaptable over the course of a season. So it is beneficial a player can have the flexibility and adaptability to fit into a different position or maybe a different formation within a system that is required at certain times.”
